Blackpool will play host to a UK musical theatre festival in October next year. With events planned for some of the seaside town’s most iconic venues including The Winter Gardens and the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, the Stage Door Festival will launch on 22 and 23 October 2022.
Aimed at anyone with an interest in musical theatre and planned as an annual event, the festival will encompass workshops, exhibition space, masterclasses, performances and Q&As.
Explaining the idea behind the festival, co-founder Michael Cosgrove, a musical theatre performer and former lecturer, said: “There are plenty of shows and events for dancers but nothing for musical theatre. As a former lecturer in musical theatre, I always wanted to take my students to a dedicated event, but there wasn’t one. As a performer too, you want to keep raising your game. Stage Door Festival will do exactly that through our inspirational line-up.”
Festival co-founder event organiser Mark Walsh added: “Blackpool and entertainment go hand in hand. Stage Door Festival will take place in October during the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations and will showcase the resort as the entertainment capital of the UK. It’s about time musical theatre had its own event and with so many iconic venues to use, Blackpool is the perfect location for the festival’s launch.”
The organisers are currently looking for brands to sponsor the event and/or exhibit at the festival and are inviting theatre professionals to get involved by joining panels, sharing their knowledge and skills at workshop events or taking part in Q&As.
