Rhiannon Chesterman will star alongside Strictly Come Dancing’s Kevin Clifton in the upcoming limited London season of The Wedding Singer.
The actress who previously appeared alongside Clifton in the 2018 and 2019 UK tours of Rock of Ages will step into the role of Julia opposite Clifton’s Robbie Hart at the newly opened Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in the former Fountain television studios from 30 January until 1 March 2020.
A favourite with fans of the BBC celebrity dance show, international Ballroom and Latin champion, Clifton previously made his musical theatre debut in another musical based on a hit movie, Dirty Dancing, at the Aldwych in 2010. Clifton joined the Strictly professional line-up in 2013 and is the only pro dancer to have reached four consecutive finals. He finally claimed the Glitterball in 2018 with his partner Stacey Dooley.
Clifton and Chesterman will be joined by two more performers from UK touring productions of Rock of Ages as well as previous production of The Wedding Singer – Erin Bell as Linda and Andrew Carthy as George.
The cast also includes Sandra Dickinson (Singin’ in the Rain, Palace Theatre) as Rosie, Ashley Emerson (The Wedding Singer 2018 UK tour) as Sammy, Jonny Fines (An Officer and a Gentleman UK tour) as Glen and Tara Verloop (Club Tropicana, UK tour).
They will be joined by Simon Anthony, Andy Brady, Jordan Crouch, Vanessa Grace Lee, Paris Green, Lori Haley Fox, Morgan Jackson, Aimee Moore, Nathan Ryles and Ellie Seaton.
Directed and choreographed by Nick Winston, the production features set and costumes by Francis O’Connor; with musical supervision by Sarah Travis; musical direction and orchestration by George Dyer; lighting design by Ben Cracknell; sound design by Richard Brooker; video design by Jack Henry James and casting is by Jim Arnold.
Based on the much-loved 1998 film which starred Adam Sandler as the lovelorn Robbie Hart and Drew Barrymore as Julia, the waitress who captures his heart, The Wedding Singer features music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin who also wrote the book with the writer of the original film Tim Herlihy.
The Tony-nominated musical debuted on Broadway in 2006 with US comedian and musician Stephen Lynch as Robbie and Tony Award-winning actress Laura Benanti as Julia. The musical arrived in the UK in 2008 with a touring production starring Jonathan Wilkes and Natalie Casey.
The newest UK version of the show hit the road in 2017 after premiering at Leicester Curve. The original cast included Jon Robyns as Robbie and Cassie Compton as Julia.
