West End stars John Owen-Jones and Rosemary Ashe will play the cookery show judges in the world premiere production of Bake Off the Musical at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre from 22 July 2022.
Owen-Jones (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables) and Ashe (The Witches of Eastwick, Oliver!) will appear alongside Jaye Jacobs (The Addams Family, Nativity!) as the presenter.
The contestants will be played by Catriana Sanderson (Evita, We Will Rock You), Charlotte Wakefield (The Boy In A Dress, Crazy For You), Claire Moore (Mary Poppins, The Girls), Damian Humbley (Local Hero, Merrily We Roll Along), Jay Saighal (Hedda Gabler, Romeo and Juliet), Michael Cahill (Les Misérables, Starlight Express), Simbi Akande ( Prince of Egypt, A Christmas Carol) with Aharon Rayner making his professional debut in the production.
Featuring an original score by multi-award-winning writers Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary, the musical inspired by the enduringly popular television series, The Great British Bake Off is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh (Half A Sixpence, Noël Coward Theatre) and designed by Alice Power.
Presented by Mark Goucher Productions Ltd and endorsed and created in association with executive producer Richard McKerrow and the television show’s producers Love Productions, the musical comedy’s strictly limited debut season at the Everyman will run from 21 July until 6 August.
Announcing the project which will be co-produced by the Everyman Theatre, leading theatre producer Mark Goucher said: “The TV phenomenon Great British Bake Off gets to the heart of the nation, and for a long time I felt that it could work wonderfully well on the stage.
“We started working on the production a couple of years ago and with this talented creative team and in association with the TV show’s creator I hope we have created a musical comedy that will win over our audiences here at the Everyman Theatre.”
Love Productions’ creative director McKerrow added: “This brand-new Bake Off the Musical has been a creative labour of love that has taken several years of painstaking development. But thanks to Mark and his fantastic team of musical producers and writers, who remained passionately committed to the cause, we really hope that this musical version embraces the soulful warmth and humorous spirit of the television show. And that it proves to be a real treat for all the family and anybody who comes. We often say, Love the Bakers, Love the Baking! Now it’s time to Love the Singers, and Love the Songs!”
With songs by Brunger and Cleary, the high-profile team behind hit show The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾ – The Musical, Bake Off the Musical will follow the familiar formula of the long-running hit TV show with a group of amateur bakers battling to impress the judges with their baking skills. The musical will feature eight competing bakers, two tough judges and a couple of witty presenters.
