The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) has released a new statement on behalf of the major commercial West End theatre operators and the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers (STAR) extending the current theatre closedown until Sunday 28 June 2020.
With the current scientific advice clearly indicating restrictions for indoor events and activities will be among the last to be lifted, the statement warns that the new date does not mean theatres will reopen on Monday 29 June.
Apologising for the decision to cancel more performances SOLT thanked customers for their continued patience as box offices and ticket agents work towards contacting all ticket-holders to discuss refund options.
Giving an insight into enormity of the task the statement went on to note that an average of 300,000 people a week usually attend West End theatres.
Ticketholders will be contacted in performance date order to arrange an exchange for a later date, credit note or refund. Anyone with tickets for performances after 28 June are being asked not to try contacting theatres or ticket agents.
Based on individual circumstances, some theatres have chosen to cancel performances beyond 28 June and many have taken the difficult decision not to take new bookings over the summer.
The decisions to reopen theatres will be made based on government and scientific advice on gatherings and events. Different theatres and productions are likely to reopen at different times.
