One of the nominees for this year’s West End Wilma Award for Best Understudy, Kieran Brown (The Phantom of the Opera) will debut this year’s awards charity single at the ceremony at the Hippodrome Casino today (Friday 4 November).
‘No Awards For You’ (a song for bad losers everywhere) is Brown’s tongue-in-cheek look at what it is like to be nominated for an award and features lyrics by Brown and the music of Willy Russell.
Based on the song ‘Tell Me It’s Not True’ from Russell’s classic musical Blood Brothers, ‘No Awards For You’ will raise funds for the National Autistic Society to help stage more relaxed performances of theatre shows, helping to make theatre more accessible to all.
With the backing of the National Autistic Society and Auburn Jam Music, the West End Wilma Awards charity single is released in two versions (one ‘radio friendly’ and the other ‘with lots of bleeps’) for digital download today.
Revealing her inspiration behind her choice of charity, West End Wilma said: “The National Autistic Society strives to put on performances for people with autism or a condition which means they may not feel comfortable around regular theatregoers. There are nowhere near enough relaxed performances going on right now.
“I would love to get to a place where all theatre productions have at least one relaxed performance scheduled in their run so that ALL theatre is accessible to ALL people.”
The third comic song about the awards to be written and performed by Brown, ‘No Awards For You’ follows on from last year when he performed a melody of songs from Gypsy with new lyrics and 2014 when he wrote and performed ‘Heva’s Lament’ (based on the Spamalot song Diva’s Lament).
