Multi-award-winning musical Wicked will embark on its third UK and Ireland tour in December 2023. Opening at the Edinburgh Playhouse on 7 December 2023, the lavish 2023/2025 touring production which will feature a cast, orchestra, company and crew of 82 people will bring the magic of Oz to 10 cities.
After the Edinburgh Playhouse run ends on 7 December 2023, the tour will visit the Bristol Hippodrome (23 January-25 February 2024), the Birmingham Hippodrome (5 March-7 April 2024), Bradford Alhambra (16 April-19 May 2024), Southampton Mayflower (23 May-16 June 2024), Liverpool Empire (20 June-14 July 2024), the Bord Gais Theatre in Dublin (23 July-15 September 2024), Sunderland Empire (24 September-20 October 2024) and the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff (24 October-23 November 2024).
The tour which will employ an additional 20 people in each city it visits will conclude with a Christmas season at the Manchester Palace Theatre from 3 December 2024 until 12 January 2025.
Announcing the tour dates, Michael McCabe, executive producer (UK and Ireland) of Wicked said: “We’re delighted to be embarking on this third tour of the UK and Ireland and taking Wicked back to 10 incredible theatres in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland where sold-out audiences previously greeted us so ecstatically. We’re excited to have this opportunity to share once again the spectacle, magic and emotion that has created unforgettable memories for audiences everywhere.”
The West End production continues to pull in the crowds at the Apollo Victoria Theatre where the producers recently announced the 34th booking extension for the hit show with 500,000 new tickets made available for all performances until 26 November 2023. Now in its 17th year at the Apollo Victoria, Wicked is currently the ninth longest-running West End musical of all time and the fifth longest-running musical currently playing in the West End. Wicked in London recently welcomed its 11th million theatregoer.
The award-winning tale of the Witches of Oz has won over 100 major international awards including three Tonys, two Oliviers and ten WhatsOnStage awards.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel which was written while the American author was living in London in 1990 and takes its inspiration from the creations of L. Frank Baum brought so vividly to life in the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, Wicked has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Disney’s Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame).
Adapted for the stage by Winnie Holzman (cult TV series My So-Called Life), the show features musical staging by Wayne Cilento and the production is directed by Joe Mantello. Music arrangements are by Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton) and Stephen Oremus (Disney’s Frozen).
