Seiriol Davies’ How to Win Against History is to be given its first full production at London’s Ovalhouse in July.
Backed by the venue since its inception as one of the new works in development featured in the FiRST BiTE programme in 2014, the show is a colourful costume drama musical about the 5th Marquis of Anglesey, Henry Cyril Paget.
An Ovalhouse and Aine Flanagan production, How to Win Against History will play the venue as part of a mini spring/summer season from 21-23 July.
Directed by Alex Swift (Caroline Horton’s Mess), the show will be performed by Davies and Matthew Blake (Punchdrunk).
The season will also include five new FiRST BiTES, each offering Ovalhouse audiences the chance to become a part of the development process by offering their feedback.
A new play inspired by a song by Nina Simone, 4Women by Loud Talkin’ is the first of the five on the 12 May, followed by Sister by Alex Groves and Rebecca Hanbury (27 May), Strawberry Vale by 9 Grams of Moon (30 June-2 July), ECHO_NARCISSUS by Emma Stirling and Nick Finegan (6-7 July) and Waking Beauty by Leigh Douglas (13-16 July).
Announcing the season, the executive producer of Ovalhouse, Stella Kanu said: “This season is the perfect showcase of the voices that our audiences love – urgent, historical, musical, funny, movement driven, digital, authoritative. Yet the season still retains its grassroots feel. This bite size season features work that shines a light on our near lifelong obsession with discovering imaginative thinking and giving space to independent voices, often quiet always persistent – voices that have something vital to say about the here and now.”
