After two years of isolation and cancellations during the pandemic, theatres are finally coming back to life and start planning for the future. In this context youth theatres are also working as proactively as ever to provide young performers with the kind of social, educational and creative activities they have been lacking for many months.
We’ve been catching up with British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT) as the company continues to plan for its new and exciting summer season. BYMT has always been doing its best to keep in touch with its young participants and provide them with creative aspirations.
In 2020, during the pandemic, the company introduced an integrated online programme featuring webinars with West End directors and performers, 1-2-1 online singing sessions with top singing tutors, and many opportunities for young people to showcase their talent. Last year BYMT’s summer season consisted of 11 amazing musical theatre shows in different areas of the UK and 11 summer camps giving creative experience to over 700 young people from every corner of the UK and overseas.
This year BYMT’s National Auditions Tour is already running across the UK, with organisers on the look out for young artists ready to take to the stage in BYMT’s new Easter and Summer seasons.
Enthusiastic and determined young people, aged from 11 to 21 years old, who demonstrate a passion for musical theatre during their BYMT auditions could be invited to star in any of the organisation’s fantastic new shows. These include mysterious musical Why The Whales Came, based on Michael Morpurgo’s famous novel, or new haunting show The Legend Of White Bear Lake, inspired by Northern Americans folklore, or many other productions. At the auditions it’s not previous training or experience that BYMT is looking for, more raw talent, integrity, ambition, energy and a willingness to learn.
Young people based in Northern Ireland with the local accent can star in BYMT’s new heart-warming and coming-of-age musical Breadboy, based on the second memoir of Northern Irish bestselling writer Tony Macaulay. Following the success of the smash-hit musical Paperboy that had two sold-out runs at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, Breadboy will be also performed at the same venue in July 2022, and now anyone can audition to perform in it.

Another BYMT show that will be featuring young performers with a certain accent will be Educating Yorkshire. Based on the famous documentary series, this show will be following the ups and downs of students at a community Academy on their voyage through school life in West Yorkshire. The humour, the angst, the warmth of teenage life in a northern community school, will be brought to life in a show that has music and lyrics by composer Adam Howell and a book by Paul Hurt. The cast of young talented individuals may already have the Yorkshire accent or will be invited to learn it as part of the process.
For Cabaret Havana, the BYMT will be looking for young people who can quickly learn Latin dance, especially Salsa, Mamba, Merengue, Rumba and Cha Cha Cha. This is a story of joy, tears, solidarity and hope inspired by the remarkable true life of Anacaona, the Castro sisters’ legendary Cuban ‘Son’ band – talented teenagers who took on the all-male world of jazz bars and dance halls and found international fame in the last century. Expect Hollywood glamour and revolutionary spirit, dancing in the street, dazzling solos and communal Conga drumming.
Young female performers aged 15-plus are likely to be invited to take part in the new revival of BYMT’s empowering all-female show Hot Wheels, celebrating the dashing roller derby culture that will be performed at the Halifax Square Chapel in BYMT’s Easter Season. Directed by Ellie Jones, this show will be featuring daring movement, spectacular harmonies and girl power at its best.
