Stage and screen star Jessica Martin will head the cast of Lionel Bart’s BLITZ! at London’s Union Theatre from 5 February until 7 March 2020.
The actress whose 30-year career includes starring roles in hit productions of Me and My Girl and Spamalot, will play Mrs Blitztein, a Petticoat Lane market trader and the formidable matriarch of the Blitztein family. Her family members will be played by Caitlin Anderson, Anna Robertson, Robbie McArtney, Anna Robertson and Corinna Marlowe.
Rival family, The Lockes will be played by Michael Martin, Connor Carson and James Home with the cast completed by Vicki Mason, James Georgiou, Danniella Schindler, Beaux Harris, Eleanor Sandars Charlotte Bradley, Eleanor Griffiths, Jack Slatter, Lorne Taylor and Stephen Hayward.
Featuring music and lyrics by Lionel Bart and a book by Bart and Joan Maitland, the celebration of the indomitable spirit of Londoners, BLITZ! opened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1962. The show returned to the West End in 1990 and 2000.
BLITZ! is the second of three productions marking the 75th anniversary of V.E. Day featured in the Phil Willmott Company’s fourth Essential Classics Season at the Bermondsey venue.
Wilmott’s musical adaptation of Thomas Hughes’ 1857 classic Tom Brown’s Schooldays which sets the story of public school life among the generation who would go on to fight in the Battle of Britain continues to play the Union Theatre until 1 February 2020.
The final production, the first UK revival of Noel Coward’s rarely-performed play Peace In Our Time will close out The Essentials Classics Season 2020: V.E. Day, 75 Years On from 11 March until 4 April.
