Musical theatre star Marisha Wallace will appear on Sunday 3 May 2020 as part of Royal Albert Home, the Royal Albert Hall’s series of exclusive streamed shows.
Musical theatre star Marisha Wallace starred on Broadway in Disney’s Aladdin, The Book of Mormon and Something Rotten, before heading to the West End to appear in Dreamgirls and Waitress. She is also due to take on the iconic role of Motormouth Maybelle in the eagerly-awaited London return of Hairspray. Wallace has also performed at the Hall four times, including a special guest slot at Katherine Jenkins’ Christmas show last year.
Lucy Noble, artistic director of the Royal Albert Hall, said: “We’re so excited to announce three more extraordinary performers for this eclectic series. So far, Royal Albert Home has spotlighted everything from Bach cello suites to Baxter Dury, taking in electronica, spoken word, and show tunes courtesy of Alfie Boe. The Hall is all about showcasing remarkable artists across endless genres, whether that’s established names or up-and-coming talent, and this specially-curated season of streamed shows underlines the diversity that’s always at the heart of our programme.
“These three new shows are a great example of that. Sinéad took our breath away with her stunning, soulful debut album, and we’re long-time fans of Natalie, whose genre-hopping records are a thing of beauty. While we’re working with those artists for the first time, Marisha has taken centre-stage at the Hall four times, enrapturing audiences with her astonishing voice. We can’t wait to share these special, one-off performances from three more acclaimed, truly distinctive artists.”
Since the Royal Albert Home strand launched on 9 April 2020, performers including Rufus Wainwright, Alfie Boe, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Jack Garratt and the Royal Choral Society have streamed concerts to a combined audience of half a million viewers, keeping music-lovers entertained during the lockdown and raising more than £25,000 for the iconic London venue, which celebrates its 150th anniversary next year.
The Hall is currently closed for the first time since the Blitz, meaning that it has no regular income to support staff or its Grade I-listed building. Though the shows are streamable free of charge, the venue is asking viewers to consider making a donation of £10 per show.
Wallace joins folk legend Richard Thompson, alt-rock act This Is the Kit and celebrated singer-songwriters Imogen Heap and Jesca Hoop in the Royal Albert Home line-up, alongside cult multi-instrumentalist David Ford and triple-platinum-selling indie band Scouting for Girls.
Other upcoming events include an at-home version of comedy-science show Sea Shambles, with hosts Robin Ince, Dr Helen Czerski and Steve Backshall joined by a host of special guests. An accompanying family programme features actor Samuel West reading ‘The Great Jelly of London’, Paul Jennings’ classic Hall-themed ‘60s kids’ book, as well as jazz, opera and classical concerts for kids.
