The Outsiders was crowned Best Musical at the 77th Tony Awards. The musical version of SE Hinton’s 1967 novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s cult 1983 film fought off stiff opposition from Alicia Keys’ semi-autobiographical Hell’s Kitchen (featuring a book by Kristoffer Diaz and musical and lyrics by Keys).
The Outsiders (with music and lyrics by Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance (Jamestown Revival) with Justin Levine and a libretto by Levine and Adam Rapp) also picked up a further three Tonys including Best Director for Danya Taymor, while Hell’s Kitchen collected two awards – the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical award for Maleah Joi Moon (her Broadway debut) and the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical Award for Kecia Lewis.
The evening’s other big genre winners included Suffs, about the 1913 Women’s Movement, with Shaina Taub winning Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score; and Merrily We Roll Along which was crowned Best Revival of a Musical with lead actor Jonathan Groff and featured actor Daniel Radcliffe both taking home awards along with orchestrator Jonathan Tunick.
Tom Scutt triumphed in the Best Scenic Design in a Musical category for his work on Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
Music drama Stereophonic, set in the 1970s, was recognised in five out of the 13 categories in which it was nominated, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play for Daniel Aukin.
The award ceremony was held on 16 June 2024 at Lincoln Center with Ariana DeBose returning for the third time in a row as host.
