Liz Carr will bring the piece Assisted Suicide: The Musical to the Unlimited Festival

The world premiere of Assisted Suicide: The Musical is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Southbank Centre Unlimited Festival in September.

Conceived and starring disabled artist and activist Liz Carr (BBC’s Silent Witness) Assisted Suicide: The Musical is Carr’s darkly comic take on life and the controversial and topical subject of assisted suicide.

The six-day festival, created to showcase the artistic vision of disabled artists, will also include the premiere of The Way You Look (At Me) Tonight, a new work by leading dance artist Claire Cunningham and international choreographer and performer Jess Curtis.

First presented in September 2012 to coincide with the London Paralympic Games, Unlimited Festival returned in 2014 and established itself as a platform for ground-breaking new works across a range of performing art forms.

Works showcased include commissions from the Unlimited Festival, a £2.4 million three-year initiative funded by Arts Council England, Arts Council of Wales and Creative Scotland, which funds disabled artists to produce work which aims to transform perceptions.

Head of festival programming at Southbank Centre, Tamsin Ace, said: “We are incredibly excited to announce the first details of our third Unlimited Festival. Southbank Centre passionately believes that the arts should be available to everyone, regardless of background, race, gender, or disability. Unlimited Festival truly demonstrates the importance of this by showcasing what extraordinary work is being made by disabled artists today.

“The festival has always sought to push boundaries and to provide a platform for discussion of the most topical issues of our day. So we are particularly proud to be presenting the world premiere of Liz Carr’s Assisted Suicide: The Musical, a brave, intelligent work which highlights how art is a vital tool to explore even the most taboo of subjects.

“Southbank Centre has built a reputation on the strength of its festival programme and commitment to bold, ambitious programming; we’re delighted to bring together the Unlimited commissions with an exciting offering of free events, participatory projects, and even more to be announced over the coming months.”

The Way You Look (At Me) Tonight will play the Royal Festival Hall on 6 and 7 September. The venue will also host two performances of Assisted Suicide: The Musical, directed and with a dramaturgy by Mark Whitelaw and produced by In Company Collective, on 10 and 11 September.

Further programme details are to be announced later this year.
