Alain Boublil’s newest musical Manhattan Parisienne will make its European debut as a work in progress at The Other Palace next month.
Presented by Robert Mackintosh in association with The Other Palace, the musical which will have its first London ‘public showings’ at the Studio at The Other Palace between Tuesday 10 and Saturday 21 October.
Announcing the production, Boublil, the lyricist on hit shows including Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, said: “Robert Mackintosh invited me to visit the theatre one day last year. I was amazed to discover how perfect a setting the Studio was for Manhattan Parisienne. Exactly what I’d dreamed of.
“I mentioned to Robert how much I’d love to do the show there and gave him a copy of the play. He also gave a copy to Paul Taylor-Mills, who liked it too. I am beyond thrilled that things have come together now so that Robert and The Other Palace, along with myself, can present a new development of the show.”
Playing as part of The Other Palace Development Programme, which has been established to assist musical creatives who would like to bring their vision to life, Manhattan Parisienne’s London run follows on from its debut in New York in late 2014.
The New York-based tale brings a French actress and a Manhattan musician together on a surreal journey through the Big Apple. Boublil’s piece features excerpts of songs from the classic French and American songbooks. Songwriters include Jacques Brel, George and Ira Gershwin, Michel Legrand, Cole Porter and Charles Aznavour.
Boublil’s wife, French actress Marie Zamora (Cosette in the original Paris production of Les Misérables), will reprise the role of Eve in the London production. Further casting and creative details will be announced at a later date.
Formerly the St James Theatre, the newest addition to The Really Useful Theatres Group, launched as The Other Palace in February with ambitious plans to discover, develop and reimagine musicals.
