The controversial Princess Diana musical will now premiere on Netflix on 1 October 2021 just over two months before the show celebrates its delayed Broadway opening night on 16 November.
As previously announced a performance of Diana: The Musical was filmed for Netflix at the Longacre Theatre without an audience in attendance last year. The filmed performance features the original Broadway cast including Jeanna de Waal in the title role, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and double Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth.
The cast also included Zach Adkins, Tessa Alves, Ashley Andrews, Austen Danielle Bohmer, Holly Ann Butler, Stephen Carrasco, Bruce Dow, Richard Gatta, Lauren E.J. Hamilton, Emma Hearn, Shaye B. Hopkins, Andre Jordan, Gareth Keegan, Nathan Lucrezio, Tomǡs Matos, Chris Medlin, Laura Stracko and Bethany Ann Tesarck.
In a joint statement announcing the Netflix screening date and the return of the show which had begun preview performances at the Longacre Theatre before the Covid closedown, producers Grove Entertainment (Beth Williams), Frank Marshall and The Araca Group said: “The chance to share our show, first with Netflix’s global audience, and then welcoming a live audience back on Broadway, is something we’ve all been dreaming about for more than a year. We could not be more thrilled to finally share both the film and the Broadway musical with the world.”
Tickets are now on sale with preview performances due to begin on 1 December ahead of the 16 December opening night. The initial booking period runs from 1 December 2021 until 20 November 2022.
The musical which had been due to receive its official world premiere on 31 March 2020 has a book and lyrics by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by fellow Tony Award-winner David Bryan (the team behind hit musical Memphis).
Directed by Tony Award-winner Christopher Ashley (Come From Away), the production is choreographed by Olivier Award-winner Kelly Devine (Come From Away), with music supervision and arrangements by Olivier Award-winner Ian Eisendrath (Come From Away).
