It’s only a few days now until the international premiere of new musical Broken Wings. The musical created by the West End star Nadim Naaman and Qatar-based composer Dana Al Fardan and based on Lebanese-born writer Kahlil Gibran’s autobiographical poetic novel, the musical will travel to Lebanon, to play the prestigious Beiteddine Arts Festival on 24, 25, and 26 July 2019.
Following last year’s semi-staged West End premiere run and the recent workshop presentation at The Other Palace, Naaman will once again lead the company as the adult Gibran, with Nikita Johal as Selma and Benjamin Purkiss as the teenage Gibran. The cast will also include: Nadeem Crowe, Soophia Foroughi, Robert Hannouch, Sami Lamine, Adam Linstead, Karl Seth, Jake Stewart and Bethany Weaver.
Featuring a book by Naaman and music and lyrics by Naaman and Al Fardan, Broken Wings is the story of Gibran’s youthful love affair with a businessman’s daughter in turn of the century Beirut. Produced by Ali Matar, the production is directed by Bronagh Lagan, and features orchestrations and musical direction by Joe Davison.
Commenting on his show’s international debut, Naaman said: “We have never stopped working to refine and improve this material. Now we are ready to take Broken Wings to the people who care for Gibran more than anyone – the Lebanese. I’m especially proud because of my Lebanese heritage, and what this project means to fans of both Gibran and theatre in the Middle East as a whole.”
The show’s co-creator Al Fardan said: “After the work we have done in London, the show’s creative home, it will be a huge moment for us to take Gibran back to his homeland this summer, and to the people who know him best.”
