Casting has been announced for new 1950s-set musical Punchy! which is due to make its debut in London early next month.
Robert Hook (Peaky Blinders, The Milkman’s on His Way, The Old Courtroom, Brighton) will take on the role of George ‘Punchy’ Armstrong with Punchy’s Ego played by Jaymes Sygrove (Blithe Spirit, Little Women tour) and Punchy’s Soul played by Peter Parker Mensah (Citadel, The Informer).
They will be joined by Lucy Penrose, Amy Mitchell, Fiona Kelly Jameson, Phillip Gill, Robert Allen and Richie Brett in the production which will debut at the Courtyard Theatre in Islington from 2-21 November 2021.
Conceived by Sylvia Anderson Award-winning composer Jack Terroni and written by playwright Kevin McMahon, Punchy! takes its inspiration from Terroni’s mother’s stories about growing up in 1950s Islington and Richard Barrett’s book What My Soul Told Me.
Commenting on the show which mixes soul, indie rock and pop, Terroni says: “I didn’t set out to write a musical as I’ve always been put off by the thought of jazz hands and glitter! If I was writing one, it had to rip up the rulebook!
“Punchy! was inspired by the real story of my mother’s working-class childhood in 1950s Islington. I was moved at how a young man with mental health challenges left home one day never to be seen again. Punchy! imagines what could have been if he followed the voice of his Soul and asks you to be courageous enough to do the same.”
The production is directed by Tiffany King, and produced by Terroni with production consultancy provided by Joan Lane and the soundtrack is produced by triple platinum-selling producer/composer Steve Brown.
Terroni also heads the live band as lead vocalist and on piano and guitar with Tony Louis Fernand on drums, Marco Marzola on bass, Ben Hadwen on saxophone, Iuri Bianchi on guitar and Charlene McTaggert on backing vocals.
