The full cast has been unveiled for this autumn’s world premiere of Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical at the Hall for Cornwall.
Based on the true story of the Cornish singing fishermen and the hit 2019 film recounting their headline hitting story, the production will feature Calum Callaghan (Mr Selfridge) as Danny, the music manager who stumbles across a group of shanty-singing fisherman in picturesque Port Isaac in Cornwall.
He will be joined by Deka Walmsley (Billy Elliot) as the band leader Jim, with his fellow fisherman and bandmates played by Robert Duncan (Rehearsal for Murder), Mensah Bediako (Master Harold and the Boys), Dan Buckley (The Book of Mormon), Rakesh Boury (Rock of Ages), Matt Slack (Blood Brothers) and Hadrian Delacey (The Phantom of the Opera). The band will be completed by Cornish actor Edward Roe, known for his comedy character Kernow King.
The cast will also include former Coronation Street favourite Susie Blake (Wicked), Parisa Shahmir (The Last Ship), Deborah Tracey (Standing At The Sky’s Edge) and Georgie Bruce (Malory Towers).
On-stage actor musicians James William-Pattison (Once), Annie Grace (The Last Ship), John O’Mahony (The Restless House), Louise Beadel (Fame) and musicians Hazel Askew (BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee), Alfie Gidley (New Roots finalist) and musical director James Findlay (winner of the BBC Young Folk Award 2010) complete the cast.
Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical will be the first production at the Truro venue when it reopens next month following a multi-million transformation project.
Inspired by the story of a group of Cornish fishermen whose love of sea shanties led to a recording contract, and an appearance on the famous Pyramid stage at Glastonbury, Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical will play a strictly limited season at Hall for Cornwall from 13-30 October.
Directed by James Grieve and written by Amanda Whittington the production features choreography by Matt Cole, with set and costume design by Lucy Osborne, musical supervision by David White, sound design by Dan Samson, lighting design by Johanna Town and casting by Jim Arnold.
Commenting on the response to the venue’s reopening production, Julien Boast, the chief executive and creative director of Hall For Cornwall, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response so far and it shows the affection people have for the Fisherman’s Friends’ story and how much people have missed live theatre. We can’t wait to raise the curtain on our fantastic new auditorium, Cornwall Playhouse.”
Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is produced by ROYO, Flying Fish Productions, Mighty Village, with Island Records, David Mirvish and Hall for Cornwall’s new in-house production company Cornwall Playhouse Productions.
