Lizzy Connolly will take on the central role of Rebecca when the musical version of the 1980s novel Indecent Proposal receives its world premiere at London’s Southwark Playhouse this autumn.
Connolly (Sweet Charity, Donmar Warehouse, On the Town, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) will join the previously announced Norman Bowman (42nd Street, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Eugenius! London Palladium) as struggling singer-songwriter Jonny with Ako Mitchell (The Color Purple, Leicester Curve/Birmingham Hippodrome, Guys and Dolls, Manchester Royal Exchange) stepping into the role of Larry, the wealthy stranger who makes the ‘indecent proposal’ of the title. Jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth (Into the Woods original London cast, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, RSC) will feature as Johnny’s friend, casino singer Annie with recent Rose Bruford graduate Eve de Leon Allen joining the cast in the supporting role of Heidi.
Postponed twice due to the pandemic, the musical version of Jack Engelhard’s original story of a young cash-strapped couple presented with a moral dilemma by a wealthy older man, is now due to make its debut at the Southwark Playhouse from 22 October until 27 November 2021.
Presented by 10 to 4 Productions and directed by Charlotte Westenra, Indecent Proposal features a book and lyrics by Michael Conley and music by Dylan Schlosberg.
Famously made in to a 1993 movie by director Adrian Lyne which starred Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, the chamber musical re-working of Engelhard’s novel stays true to the book’s setting of Atlantic City in the 1980s while adding a contemporary twist.
Commenting on the show, director Westenra said: “I am so excited to share this beautiful, important story that is of its time but also painfully relevant today. Like in the show, people with influence still use it to take more than we’re sometimes willing to give. The fact that it happens all the time doesn’t make it right, even if you agree to give it. We can’t wait for audiences to come and contribute to the conversation and ask themselves what they would do if they were to receive an indecent proposal.”
Produced by Neil Marcus for 10 to 4 Productions, the creative team includes musical supervisor John Reddell, with set and costume design by Anna Kelsey, lighting design by Hartley Kemp and movement by Jane McMurtie.
