The UK premiere of You Are Here at Southwark Playhouse has been moved back a few weeks following the unveiling of the Government’s ‘roadmap back to normality’.
Originally due to run from 29 April until 22 May 2021, the production will now begin preview performances on 17 May, the earliest date set by Government to allow the reopening of theatres with social distancing.
Presented by the newly launched theatre company The Grey Area, it is now hoped the production will be performed live from The Large to in-person socially distanced audiences from 17 May until 12 June.
With music and lyrics by Neil Bartram and a book by Brian Hill – the team behind Broadway musicals The Story of My Life and Something Wicked This Way Comes and the upcoming Bedknobs & Broomsticks – You Are Here is set on the night of the moon landing 20 July 1969.
Wendi Peters (Big, Dominion Theatre, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Arts Theatre) will take centre stage as Chicago housewife Diana, who takes her own ‘giant leap into the unknown’ when she walks out on her safe, comfortable suburban life. Further casting will be announced soon.
The Grey Area’s artistic director Matthew Rankcom (Before After) will direct the production with musical direction by Laura Bangay, movement direction by Annie Hibbert, set and costume design by Libby Todd, lighting design by Jai Morjaria and sound design by Charles Parry.
Tickets are on sale for the live performances in the hope that the current ban on live theatre performances will be lifted in May. If the live shows go ahead the run will also include two live-streamed performance on 22 May at 3pm and at 7.30pm. If government guidance does not allow for audiences to be present in the theatre, all performances will be live-streamed and ticket holders will be offered the chance to watch the production online or obtain a refund.
Southwark Playhouse currently has a selection of on-demand streams available via the Southwark Stayhouse streaming platform on the website.
