The Happy Prince continues at C south until 25 August.
This is a new venue in the now sprawling ‘C Empire’, sitting in the south of the city, handy for the Queen’s and King’s Halls audiences. It can only be hoped that some find their way to this gentle, delightful show.
Founded as part of The Quest – an ambitious programme led by Chris Grady to discover and nurture new talent for musical theatre – The Happy Prince is a lovely interpretation of the Oscar Wilde tale.
Sue Casson immediately makes the audience feel that they are in safe hands: her performance is engaging and she has sensibly been tasked with the role of narrating and driving this piece.
Some music is played live and some to a track – I would like to see more ‘live’, simply because it allows performers to breathe and grow as their interpretation develops.
The English Cabaret’s cast of four works well together, sprinkling the show with magic and even a toffee from the Happy Prince himself. A delightful hour!
