Susanna Paisio in Song of the Earth at the Italian Cultural Institute as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Song of the Earth continues at the Italian Cultural Institute until 9 August.
Making its debut at the Fringe, this Italian company is housed in an almost ‘pop up’ Fringe venue in the Italian Cultural Institute – taking us to a space which is delightfully non-corporate and genuinely supporting the artist. What appears at first to be a first floor ‘drawing room’ is transformed by light, sound and performance into an oasis of artistic splendour.
This is a solo piece, delivered by Susanna Paisio: a compelling artist who holds an audience with ease. Her physical and vocal skills are magnificent, at times fragile, and at times strong; she encapsulates the vagaries of the planet we live on and our relationship with the fragile balance we struggle to maintain. We are encouraged to ‘live in sympathy with the earth’ as colour and sound wash over us from the wistful, fairy-like figure Paisio brings to us.
The blend of both Italian and English languages seems to exemplify the blending of our awareness and understanding of our relationship with the world around us. And it is clear that you don’t need to understand the Italian language to interpret the spirit and meaning of her message.
Live mixing and an electric guitar are Paisio’s only accompaniments to create the wash of sound that creates a truly magical, meditative atmosphere. I for one am a dandelion!!! Go and see if you are, too.
