Former Strictly pro-champ turned musical theatre star Joanne Clifton will replace the previously announced Samantha Womack as Morticia in the new UK and Ireland touring production of The Addams Family, A Musical Comedy when it opens at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham on 5 November 2021.
The dancer who won the glitterball trophy in 2016 with celebrity partner Ore Oduba, will add the role of the Addams Family matriarch to a musical theatre CV that includes playing Janet in the UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show, Alex Owen in the UK tour of Flashdance and an Offie-nominated performance as Dale Tremont in the London Fringe premiere of Top Hat.
Clifton will star alongside the show’s returning Gomez, Cameron Blakeley, Scott Paige as Uncle Fester, Kingsley Morton as Wednesday Addams, Grant McIntyre as Pugsley Addams, Valda Aviks as Grandma, Sean Kingsley as Mal Beineke, Kara Lane as Alice Beineke and Ahmed Hamad as Lucas Beineke. Lurch will be played by Dickon Gough in 2021 with Ryan Bennett stepping into the role in January 2022.
The cast also includes Abigail Brodie, Sophie Hutchinson, Matthew Ives and Sean Lopeman. Another cast newcomer Castell Parker joins the ensemble.
Presented by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment and Music & Lyrics Limited, the production is staged by the director of the successful first UK and Ireland tour of the hit gothic musical comedy in 2017, Matthew White (The Producers, Mr Stink UK tours).
The 2021/2022 tour will follow its opening run in Nottingham (5-13 November) by visiting Cardiff, Sheffield, Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bradford, Newcastle, Wimbledon, Dartford, Bromley and Hull. Further tour dates will be added soon.
Featuring a book by the creators of the multi award-winning Jersey Boys, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa (Big Fish), the production is choreographed by Alistair David with production design by Diego Pitarch, orchestrations by Richard Beadle, lighting design by Ben Cracknell, sound design by Richard Brooker and casting by Jane Deitch.
Based on the much-loved characters created by Charles Addams, the original Broadway production opened on Broadway in 2010. Starring Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia, the multi-million-dollar production won four Broadway.com audience awards. The Broadway production closed at the end of 2011 and there were a number of international and touring productions of the show including a US tour also in 2011 and a European premiere in Sweden in 2012.
