Leading independent theatre production company Metta Theatre has released a six-track EP of songs from its new musical The Little Prince accompanied by a short film featuring shadow puppetry produced in association with Little Angel Theatre.
Written and directed by Metta’s artistic director P Burton-Morgan, with Candida Caldicot as composer and musical director, Will Reynolds as film-maker with mixing and mastering by Simon Small and puppetry design by Su Owens, the film and album features Rosalind Ford, Josh Barnett and Anna-Marie Piazza. The music is provided by Caldicot on keys, Clare Taylor on violin and Maddie Cutter on cello.
Commenting on the musical which takes its inspiration from Antoine De Saint Exupery’s much-loved story, writer and director P Burton-Morgan said: “The eventual live production will be a full-length musical but it’s been a joy reimagining it as a short puppetry film. The tenderness of Candida’s magical score and Su’s delightful puppets, coupled with the poignancy of the original story, really speak to the profound sense of loss we’re all navigating our way through right now and how ultimately we can all find solace in the power of the imagination.”

Founded in 2005 by writer/director Burton-Morgan and designer William Reynolds, Metta has collaborated with the Little Angel on a number of projects including a shadow puppet production of Benjamin Britten’s Canticles in 2010, a puppetry adaptation and 2014 UK tour of Alice in Wonderland with acclaimed puppeteer Mandy Travis and a circus/puppetry musical adaptation of Rob Biddulph’s Blown Away in 2017.
The debut of The Little Prince follows on from the successful recent release of CELLS – a new musical starring Metta’s new patron, Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe (In The Willows, Guys and Dolls) and rising star Lem Knights (School of Rock, Billionaire Boy) which was also written and directed by P Burton-Morgan, with music by Ben Glasstone. During 2020, the company focused on the launch of three other studio albums and music videos for The Rhythmics, Housefire and In The Willows, as well as the launch of environmental consultancy Metta Green.
