Flute Theatre will follow its successful lockdown version of Pericles with a new online series of interactive performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream tailor-made for autistic individuals and their families.
Running from 12 October until 12 December 2020 the performances will last up to an hour and will be adapted to suit the individual needs of audience members who will take part via Zoom.
Announcing Flute’s latest project to help and support one of the groups hardest hit by the Covid-lockdown, artistic director Kelly Hunter said: “I first created these sensory games for autistic people from A Midsummer Night’s Dream 20 years ago, when I began this work.
“The play’s exploration of an inverted world with eyes that hear, ears that see, hands that taste and minds that love, gave me a perfect starting place to explore the sensory world of autism and create my sensory games for autistic people.
“Now with Covid-19 continuing to restrict the physical proximity between actor and autistic participant, these sensory games take on a deeper resonance as I continue to adapt my work from real space to virtual. Our production, with our interactive games of dream worlds and awakenings, will offer families who are marginalised and locked away a place to combat isolation, express their deeper feelings and shine their inner lights more brightly than before.”
The show is experienced through sensory games, with each game creating a different dream shared by the actors and the autistic participants. If a participant finds one of the dream games particularly enjoyable, they can play it with the company as long as they wish to. There are no age limits for participation and schools can also take part with up to three autistic individuals. Each performance costs £10 (or free of charge to those who are struggling due to the financial aspect of the pandemic).
Directed by Hunter, the cast of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is made up of Hephzibah Roe, Holly Musgrave, Joshua Welch, Oliver McLellan, Natasha Haward and Paul Gorostidi. The creative team also includes company stage manager Heather Cooper and assistant director Oscar Fabres. Music is by Holly Musgrave.
