New musical comedy Ruby and the Vinyl will take a tour of northern theatres this spring. Written by acclaimed playwright John Godber and his daughter Elizabeth, with songs by BBC supporting artist Ruby Macintosh, the quirky love story will open at the Theatre Royal in Mackintosh’s hometown of Wakefield from 3-12 February 2022.
Commenting on his writing partnership with his daughter, double-BAFTA winner Godber said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Elizabeth on this funny, touching new musical, her characters are unique and fresh, and the songs are catchy and the singing is amazing… If you’re looking for something to lift your spirits after a pretty bleak time Ruby will certainly put a smile on your face!”
With a number of musicals already to her credit, Elizabeth added: “Ruby is such a feel-good show, I’m sure people of all ages will enjoy a good night out; it’s kind of a love story, but not…”
Produced by the John Godber Company, the production stars Harrogate actress Millie Gaston and Wakefield’s George Reid as the couple who bond over their love of all things retro.
Following the Wakefield performances, the production will visit East Riding Theatre in Beverley (1-26 March), the Old Laundry Theatre, Bowness-on Windermere (29 March), Liverpool’s Royal Court (30 March-2 April) and Bridlington Spa (7-8 April).
