The National Youth Music Theatre’s 2022 summer season will feature two major musical productions, Chess and Ragtime, along with the world premiere of A Kiss For Cinderella – a new musical based on a play by J M Barrie – and a new showcase concert.
A large cast and orchestra of young people will star in NYMT In Concert at the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon Thames on 9 July. Directed and choreographed by Chris Cuming, the celebration of young talent will feature staged performances of extracts from a range of musical theatre productions including a number from NYMT’s catalogue of recent commissions and premieres. The creative team for NYMT In Concert will also include musical director Tom Slade, lighting designer Luke Marino and sound designer Nick Hall.
The NYMT’s first summer season musical, Chess will play Leicester Curve from 10-13 August. Directed by Alex Sutton, the youth production of Benny Andersson, Tim Rice and Björn Ulvaeus’ popular work will be choreographed by Adam Haigh with musical direction by Jordan Li-Smith and set and lighting design by Andrew Exeter.
Annabel Mutale Reed will direct the world premiere of A Kiss For Cinderella, the first of two NYMT productions to play the MCT at Alleyn’s, Alleyn’s School in Dulwich, London. Featuring music by Jack Trzcinski, and book and lyrics by Mutale Reed, A Kiss For Cinderella is an adaptation of Barrie’s 1916 play about the magic of the Cinderella story and its influence on a group of refugee children.
Reed heads a creative team that includes musical director Matthew Jackson, choreographer Lucinda Lawrence, set and costume designer Libby Todd and lighting designer Aaron Dootson.
Hannah Chissick will direct the second production at the MCT, Ragtime. The new production of the multi-award-winning show written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and playwright Terrence McNally will play the Dulwich venue from 25-27 August.
The creative team for the production also includes musical director David Randall, choreographer Nathan ‘Neo’ Gordon, set and costume designer Libby Todd and lighting designer Aaron Dootson.
Auditions for 2023 will be announced in October.
