There are artists who return to the Fringe year after year. Peter Straker secures his seat at the top table once again with a masterclass in performance. Backed by a brilliant group of musicians (led by Conrad Molleson on bass), this must be one of the quickest hours on the Fringe.
Black Magic is a showcase of some of the best numbers from Straker’s extensive repertoire and a few new songs lucky enough to join the shortlist. The songs chosen give the audience a chance to hear them as if for the first time. Delivering lyrics with a passion Mick Jagger can only ever dream of, Straker moves from the Stones to Queen to Brel and many points in between with a passion and commitment that every young performer should witness and aim for.
His strength is in his emotional connection to a lyric that goes beyond rehearsal and intellect: this is a man who inhabits each song so completely that it spoils any other rendition you’ve ever heard.
Black Magic indeed – and there’s even magic and dark chocolates. Grab it whilst you can – simply brilliant – he’ll put a spell on you…
