Preludes The Concert to be live-streamed by Southwark Playhouse

Southwark Playhouse will live stream a concert version of triple Tony Award nominee Dave Malloy’s Preludes in May.

Previously seen in The Large in the autumn of 2019, the new version of UK premiere production which was directed by Alex Sutton and produced by Danielle Tarento will reunite the original cast for the live-streamed performances on 7 May (at 7.45pm) and 8 May (at 3.15pm and 7.45pm).

Subtitled ‘A Musical Fantasia Set In The Hypnotised Mind Of Sergei Rachmaninoff’, the musical is based on the true story of the Russian composer and virtuoso musician’s sessions of hypnotherapy in his early twenties.

The returning cast is made up of Tom Noyes who made his professional debut in the original production in the role of Rachmaninoff with Rebecca Caine (Flowers For Mrs Harris, Sheffield Crucible, Les Misérables, West End) as Dahl, Norton James (Spamalot, Mercury Theatre, Love Story, Union Theatre) as Chaliapin; Georgia Louise (Mamma Mia! Novello Theatre) as Natalya; Keith Ramsay (Amour, Charing Cross Theatre, Lost in Yonkers, Watford Palace) as Rach and Steven Serlin (Amour, Charing Cross Theatre, The Wild Party, The Other Palace) as The Master.

The live-stream production team is made up of the original production’s sound designer Andrew Johnson and musical director Jordan Li-Smith with lighting design by Andrew Exeter. The creative team for the 2019 London production also included set and costume designer Rebecca Brower, lighting designer Christopher Nairne, and choreographer Ste Clough.

Commenting on the show ahead of its UK debut in 2019, composer and writer Malloy said: “I am so so thrilled and tickled to see Preludes be given new life in this London premiere. It’s a very personal piece for me, wrestling with all the things it is to be an artist and a human, and the score features my music entwined with Rachmaninoff’s work, some of the most romantic and rousing piano music I know. I cannot wait to come to Southwark Playhouse and see this show reimagined by this amazing new team.”

Combining live piano and electronics, Malloy’s work premiered Off-Broadway in 2015 with stage and screen actor Chris Sarandon (Dog Day Afternoon, The Light in the Piazza, Broadway) winning critical acclaim for his performance as The Master. Malloy is best known for Natasha Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, the War and Peace-inspired electro-pop musical which was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.
