The first stage adaptation of the 2010 movie musical Burlesque will receive its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House next summer.
Featuring a book by the backstage movie’s director and original writer Steven Antin with additional material by Kate Wetherhead, the musical will feature music and lyrics by pop superstars Christine Aguilera and Sia, multi-award-winning songwriter Diane Warren, singer and choreographer Todrick Hall, and singer Jess Folley.
Presented by Adam Paulden and Sue Gilad and Larry Rogowsky, Steven Antin and Christine Aguilera, the musical will debut in Manchester from 13-29 June 2024.
Pop superstar Aguilera who made her movie debut in the film and will serve as executive producer on the musical said: “Burlesque was my first feature film — and creating the role of Ali along with co-writing the music was a part of my career that I will always cherish.
“I am so happy to be reunited with Steven, this time behind the scenes as an executive producer and contributing songwriter for our new stage version. Re-creating Burlesque as a live theatre experience is something I always hoped would happen, and here we are!”
Antin added: “To say that I’m excited is an understatement. ‘Peel me off the ceiling’ is more accurate. Getting Burlesque the Musical to the stage has been an ambition and a dream of mine for over 10 years.
“I’m working with the best creative and producing team in the world, and we are all beyond thrilled that Christina has chosen to come on board as executive producer. It’s a privilege to be working with her again. Her unrivalled experience, intuition and artistry continues to elevate everything. So exciting to be on this new journey with Xtina.”
Directed and choreographed by Nick Winston, the creative team for the production will include set designer Soutra Gilmour, musical arranger and orchestrator Tom Curran, costume designer Ryan Dawson Laight, musical supervisor Phil Bateman, musical director Chris Poon, creative co-producer/associate choreographer Robin Antin, casting director Harry Blumenau, casting associate Sarah-Jane Price and production manager Lloyd Thomas.
Featuring a star-studded cast led by Cher, Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell, Alan Cumming and Peter Gallagher, the movie Burlesque features the Golden Globe Award-winning Diane Warren-penned song ‘You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me’ performed by Cher.
