Strictly Come Dancing’s reigning champion Joanne Clifton will continue in her starring role in the UK touring production of Flashdance The Musical following a Christmas break from 9 December until 29 January 2018 [during this time Clifton will feature in the London Fringe premiere of the stage version of the classic 1935 film Top Hat at North London’s Upstairs at the Gatehouse].
The dance pro who quit the hit TV show after lifting the glitterball with celebrity partner Oru Oduba to concentrate on her blossoming musical theatre career, will be back on stage in Flashdance when the tour relaunches in early 2018.
Announcing her decision to continue in the role of the welder who dreams of attending a prestigious dance school, Clifton said: “I am having the best time ever on this tour and so am delighted to be staying on for 2018. We have so much fun on stage and off, and I really am dancing like I’ve never danced before!”
Flashdance The Musical returned to tour the UK in July this year for the first time since 2011. The tour is currently due to end at Coventry Belgrade Theatre in September 2018. However, further dates are to be announced.
The production is presented by Selladoor Productions, the award-winning team behind popular productions of Footloose and Avenue Q, and Runaway Entertainment, the producers of hit shows, In The Heights and Lazarus.
Based on the much-loved 1983 Paramount Pictures film Flashdance, the musical received its world premiere in 2008 in Plymouth ahead of its first UK tour.
With a book by the co-screenwriter of the original film Tom Hedley and Robert Carey, with lyrics by Carey and Robbie Roth, Flashdance The Musical features the distinctive Giorgio Moroder/Irene Cara award-winning title track ‘Flashdance (What a Feeling)’ as well as the hits ‘Maniac’ and ‘Gloria’.
A hit with audiences and the critics, the production stars Clifton alongside Ben Adams, Colin Kiyani, Rikki Chamberlain, Garry Lee Netley, Carol Ball, Sia Dauda, Hollie Ann Lowe, Simeon Beckett, Rhodri Watkins, Demmileigh Foster, Emily Kenwright, Ameila Rose Fielding, Alex Christian, Matt Concannon, Verity Jones, Ross Meagrow and Sasha Latoya.
