Anastasia – Circus Theater Scheveningen, The Netherlands
Anastasia continues at the Circus Theater Scheveningen, The Netherlands. Star rating: five stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Dutch premiere of Anastasia at the Circus Theater Scheveningen had the most glamorous opening night I’ve attended for a long time. In the presence of the show’s composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens, the event was of epic […]
Once On This Island – Circle in the Square Theatre, New York
Once On This Island continues at Circle in the Square Theatre, New York. Star rating: five stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ With its time shifts, strange native names and interacting mix of gods, hard-working native folks and mixed-blood aristocrats, the rather simple poor-native-girl-meets-rich-aristocratic-boy story of Once On This Island can seem a bit overburdened. […]
Lucky Stiff – Union Theatre
Lucky Stiff continues at the Union Theatre, London until 21 October. Star rating: three stars ★★★✩ ✩ If there’s one adjective which, when applied to musical theatre, fills one with a sense of trepidation, it’s “zany”. But that’s the only way to describe the first professionally produced collaboration between book writer and lyricist Lynn Ahrens […]

A Christmas Carol – Lost Theatre
A Christmas Carol continues at the Lost Theatre, London until 31 December. Star rating: three stars ★ ★ ★ ✩ ✩ It can feel as if there are as many variant adaptations of Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol as there are of Peter Pan. Movie musical review – Lucky Stiff
Lucky Stiff, a musical farce by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Once on This Island, Ragtime), has been around since 1988 when it won the Richard Rodgers Award for an Off-Broadway production by the Playwrights Horizons theatre company. Since then, it has had moderate success over here in the UK but is a well-loved staple […]
Lucky Stiff – Drayton Arms Theatre
Lucky Stiff continues at the Drayton Arms Theatre, London until 14 May. Star rating: two stars ★ ★ ✩ ✩ ✩ The less said about this musical farce, this desperately unfunny debut effort by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty long before they hit the big-time with Ragtime and Seussical, the better. A game, energetic cast of ten […]
