A rock re-working of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment with songs by pop star Toyah Wilcox will debut at this year’s Free Open-Air Theatre Season in the heart of the capital.
Presented by the award-winning Gods and Monsters, the new rock musical will play Southwark’s The Scoop as part of the London Bridge City Summer Festival which runs until 31 October.
Adapted and directed by Phil Willmott with music by Wilcox and her long-term songwriting partner Simon Darlow, the new adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s 1866 classic novel will run from Wednesday 31 August until Sunday 25 September.
Speaking of her involvement in the project, the original ‘Punk Princess’ Wilcox said: “Who could resist this chance to help introduce theatregoers, great literature and steam punk all in one show, performed for free to such a huge and multi-cultural audience in this iconic beautiful venue?
“Capturing the spirit of Dostoyevsky’s alienated characters has been a wonderful challenge and I’m excited that this collaboration will engage tens of thousands of people with this extraordinary novel in so fresh and enticing a way and is totally fitting with my musical work.”
Willmott added: “Our surveys tell us that a significant percentage of our audience are new to theatre and to many of the masterpieces of world literature, so it is with particular pleasure that we look forward to introducing them to Crime and Punishment.
“I’m particularly excited that we’re collaborating with rock legend Toyah Wilcox and Simon Darlow whose impactful, timeless roster of hits and new songs so perfectly match the raw, urgent energy of Dostoyevsky’s characters and messages.”
Offering 40,000 free tickets for theatre on the South Bank of the River Thames, London’s Free Open-Air Theatre Season has been attracting crowds since 2003.
