Casting for Spamilton at the Menier Chocolate Factory

Casting has been announced for the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of Gerard Alessandrini’s Hamilton-inspired spoof Spamilton which will make its UK debut this month.

Running from 12 July until 8 September 2018 with an opening night on 24 July, the UK premiere of Spamilton marks a return to the Menier for Forbidden Broadway creator Alessandrini.

Alessandrini will direct Marc Akinfolarin, who returns to the Menier after appearing in Assassins and The Color Purple, Jason Denton (The School of Rock, Show Boat), Eddie Elliott (Motown, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Liam Tamne (Working, The Rocky Horror Show) and Julie Yammanee (Lazarus, Priscilla Queen of the Desert).

They will be joined by special guests Sophie-Louise Dann, who previously appeared at the Menier in both productions of Forbidden Broadway, and Damian Humbley whose credits include Menier’s Merrily We Roll Along and the Vaudeville Theatre’s production of Forbidden Broadway.

Menier’s Spamilton will feature choreography by Gerry McIntyre, set design by Morgan Large, costume design by Dustin Cross, lighting design by Tim Lutkin, sound design by Gregory Clarke and Jonathan Everett, musical arrangements by Fred Barton and musical direction by Simon Beck. Spamilton is presented in association with John Freedson, David Zippel and Christine Pedi.

The good-natured send-up of the multi-award-winning Hamilton has already won the support of the record-breaking show’s Lin-Manuel Miranda who is quoted as saying “I laughed my brains out” when he saw the show.

Best known for creating and writing all 25 editions of Forbidden Broadway in New York, Los Angeles, London and across the world, award-winning Alessandrini’s latest work also takes aim at a host of the theatre world’s most famous names and biggest shows.

Debuting Off-Broadway in July 2016 in a production directed by Alessandrini, Spamilton was originally due to play just 18 performances. An instant hit with audiences and the critics, the show’s debut run at The Triad in New York was extended until May 2017. A month later the production moved to the 47th Street Theatre just a few doors away from the Richard Rogers Theatre, the Broadway home of Hamilton.
