Leeds Playhouse to stage new production of Brassed Off musical

A major new production of the stage musical adaptation of Mark Herman’s moving 1996 film Brassed Off will feature in the spring/summer 2026 season at the Leeds Playhouse.

Marking the 30th anniversary of Herman’s powerful film, the production which will be directed by Amy Leach (Animal Farm, Best Play Revival at the 2025 UK Theatre Awards) will play the Quarry Theatre from 18 June to 11 July.

Adapted for the stage by Paul Allen, the Leeds Playhouse production will use live music from local brass bands to bring the emotional story of the Yorkshire mining community of Grimley as they face the closure of their local colliery and a fight to keep their brass band alive to the Leeds stage.

Commenting on the production, Leach said: “It’s a real honour to bring Brassed Off  to the stage in a fresh new production, especially as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic British film. This story of resilience, community and the unifying power of music feels just as urgent and moving today as it did in 1996. With live brass band performances and a brilliant creative team, we’re reimagining Grimley Colliery Band’s journey for a new generation and I can’t wait to share it with audiences at Leeds Playhouse.”
