Premiere of Love Letters will be part of Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch reopening plans

The delayed premiere of new jukebox-style musical Love Letters will be part of the reopening season at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch.

Written and directed by the venue’s artistic director Douglas Rintoul and featuring the music of home-grown Essex stars from the 1960s up to present day, the musical comedy which tells the story of young love in 1960s and an unposted love letter delivered years later will debut on the main stage from 30 July until 21 August 2021.

Love Letters was created as part of the Theatre’s Essex On Stage programme – an ambitious two-year programme celebrating the creativity of the people of Essex led by Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch and supported by The Clothworkers’ Foundation. The musical had been due to premiere in Hornchurch in April last year before playing dates at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

Subject to the Government’s Roadmap, Love Letters will follow the season’s opening production of Tim Firth’s hit comedy Neville’s Island. With social distancing measures remaining in place at least through May and June, the new production of Firth’s first full-length play will run from 20 May until 12 June and from 22 June until 3 July.

The theatre is also offering a range of socially distanced comedy, dance and family guest shows through May and June. The venue will also be showcasing Essex Girl – a new work from local artist Maria Ferguson as part of its Outer Limits programme on its newly renamed The Other Stage and will also continue its sing-a-long musical for people living with dementia and their carers – Down Memory Lane.

Early autumn will mark the return of Romford-born David Eldridge (In Basildon) with his play Beginning. A National Theatre production in association with Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch, the play which received its world premiere at the National Theatre in 2017 before transferring to the West End, will be revived and relaunched by Queen’s Theatre from 3-18 September.

Tickets are already on sale for the traditional family pantomime Aladdin by Andrew Pollard which will run from 25 November 2021 until 2 January 2022.

Details of the rest of the Autumn 2021 season of productions including a newly commissioned play will be announced in late June.
